The Key 3x5 is a Woodruff-style locking key that serves as the primary mechanical link between the drive shafts and their respective gears. In the Dnepr MT-11 engine, this part is used in two critical locations: securing the Camshaft driven gear and the Oil Pump drive gear.

Its role is fundamental to engine survival. By locking the oil pump gear to the shaft, it ensures a constant flow of lubricant to the crankshaft and connecting rod bearings, maintaining the required oil pressure of 0.3 to 0.6 MPa. Simultaneously, in the valve timing gear, it ensures that the camshaft rotates in perfect synchronization with the crankshaft, controlling the precise opening and closing of the inlet and outlet valves. Because this key absorbs the torque of the drive system, a sheared or worn key can lead to a sudden loss of oil pressure (indicated by the emergency oil pressure lamp) or a total loss of engine timing, both of which can cause severe internal engine damage.
